About InTheory

The people who
stand behind it.

The name on the work is Phil Cowan: twenty-five years across product, design, and engineering. He is not the only one. Martin Naithani manages product and Jill Bradbury manages marketing, both of them on the AI delivery work. Behind them, partner companies on the bench and a fleet of specialized agents connected through an agentic OS. The firm has been at it since 2011.

Innovation Theory, since 2011.
The work stayed the same.

2011
The gig yearsInnovation Theory, Denver
In 2011, every business wanted an app.
Apple and Android, and nobody had a bench deep enough for the work coming in. So we assembled one a job at a time, out of people who were not ours, and we answered for what they shipped. The Denver studio grew into data-driven products and a run of startups; two of them launched out of our own office.
2020
The distributed yearscontract teams and partner firms
Then the bench stopped being in the room.
Overseas contract teams and partner companies, working across time zones on longer engagements. The fund rails for WallStreetBets ran with teams in the US, Europe, India and Australia. Same job as before: decide what gets built, hand it out, and be the one accountable for what comes back.
2024
The agent yearsInTheory, the AI delivery practice
Now the resource is AI.
AI writes the first pass of everything, and it is quietly filling companies with running systems nobody will put a name on. That is the same management problem we have had for fifteen years, with a faster worker that never says it is unsure. InTheory takes the draft the rest of the way, from in theory to in production, and puts an owner on systems already running.

The record runs the whole way through: 140+ engagements. Creative direction on Disney, Pixar, and Universal film campaigns. ShapeShift and SALT Lending launched out of our own office, fractional CTO through SALT’s launch. Fund rails for WallStreetBets, with teams across the US, Europe, India, and Australia.

25 years · 140+ engagements · in business since 2011 · every name above is on the record, losses included

A team of experts. A fleet of agents. A bench of partners. A human on every call.

The job is the same. AI agents now handle some of the research, drafting, and testing. The scoping and the final call still have a name on them. The rest runs on the fleet. Here is how the work divides:

The name on itPhil Cowan

Phil scopes the work, makes the final call, and signs the result. Twenty-five years across product, design, and engineering, and still at the desk every day.

The fleetAI agents, in production

We use a lot of agents here, to do work: they read, research, draft, and test around the clock. Building with AI every day is how we know what it can carry and where it drops things.

The partnerstrusted companies, on call

When a build needs more hands, partner companies step in. These are good people; we have shipped with every one of them before.

The judgmenta human on every call

Every answer that leaves here passes a person first. And when AI does not belong in your business, we say so: no-go is always an acceptable answer. If we could only ever say go, that would be sales.
